Expertise

As a writer-scholar, editor, multidisciplinary artist, and former high school English teacher, Marama works within the broad fields of Māori and Indigenous Literary Studies, Creative Writing, Toi Māori and Iwi Rangahau. Her PhD project explored Indigenous multigenre and Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki creativity. Marama has an MA in Creative Writing from Victoria University in Wellington and an MA in Māori Cultural Studies / Tikanga Māori from Waikato University. Her PhD project explored multigenre and Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki creativity. Marama co-edited the anthology To Feel The Earth as One’s Skin: Indigenous Visual Poetry and her critical and creative writing has been published in various Huia Short Stories anthologies, in An Ocean of Wonder: The Fantastic in the Pacific, Yellow Medicine Review, Quick Brown Dog, Turbine, The Journal of the Polynesian Society, Literature Compass, and the Journal of Global Indigeneity.
